Celebrating Equality and Dignity: International Human Rights Day

December 10, 2023

December 10th 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of International Human Rights Day, a significant occasion dedicated to promoting fundamental values such as equality, peace, justice, freedom, and the protection of human dignity. The essence of this day lies in recognising the inherent rights of every individual, transcending barriers of caste, creed, race, colour, religion, sex, language or social status.

This year, our Human Rights team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre orchestrated a meaningful celebration in Diamond Harbour, taking the spirit of the day to the grassroots level. Engaging with government stakeholders, mothers, children, and community members from remote villages, the event aimed to foster respect and dignity for everyone, with a special focus on persons with physical disabilities.

In the heart of Diamond Harbour, the vibrant celebration unfolded, echoing the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event became a powerful platform for advocacy, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and understanding. Government stakeholders joined hands with the community, reinforcing the commitment to upholding human rights at all levels.

The focal point of the celebration was the spotlight on persons with physical challenge. Through various activities and interactions, the Human Rights team worked towards dismantling stereotypes and promoting a more inclusive society. By engaging with mothers, children, and community members, the initiative sought to weave a collective consciousness that champions the rights and dignity of every individual.

As we reflect on the significance of International Human Rights Day, let us carry forward the spirit of this celebration into our daily lives. The commitment to equality, justice, and dignity is not confined to a single day but serves as a constant reminder of the values we aspire to uphold. Together, we can create communities where every person, regardless of their abilities or background, is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

On this 75th anniversary, let us renew our dedication to the cause of human rights, working hand in hand to build a world where these principles are not just celebrated annually but embedded in the fabric of our societies.
