Statistical figures show that 1/3 of the world’s blind population live in India. It is estimated that by 2010 the blind population of India would cross 1.5 crores and cataract accounts for 80% of this figures.
As part of our community out reach programs, KMWSC conducted free screening eye camps in collaboration with Susruth Eye foundation Salt Lake. There were 100 people who attended the camp.There were 2 doctors and 2 helpers were present during the eye check up camp.
Those who were identified with cataract will be operated free of cost in their hospital on 7th of August 2017. 13 people identified to have cataract problem will be brought to Kolkata by the centre teachers for operation. All the expenses will be borne by Susruth eye foundation. The children will be given spectacles free of cost.
During the eye camps, two types of services are provided: free prescriptions based on necessary medical check-ups and free cataract surgery, if necessary.
One of the parents expressed their gratitude to the saying that the eye camp had been a great help as she had finally learned the issue with her daughter’s sight. KMWSC team felt a great sense of achievement, knowing that they had spent their day for a worthy cause. One of the doctors from the hospital remarked: “It is satisfying to reach out to so many people in a day. I clearly had a good day knowing that we have helped so many children today, health-wise.”
It can be said that these camps are serving to educate the local community on eye care.This programme will help many to understand the importance of maintaining good eye health and sight by regular eye check ups
