Red Light Area Project

Sonagachi, the largest Red Light District of Asia houses in its bosom not only Commercial Sexual Workers (CSW) but thousands of innocent children. Ostracized since their birth as illegitimate they live a childhood which is devoid of its true essence and instead is shrouded with the grim darkness of sex trade, drug addiction, alcoholism and anti social activities.

Working with the children of CSW’s, KMWSC strongly felt the growing demand of presence in the community to hold the hands of the children and make them walk along the path of hope. The centre in the community now provides support to 50 children in the community. Facilities as remedial and bridge educational support, life skill education, recreational workshops are reached out to the children. 20 Mothers benefit from the vocational training – Beautician and Tailoring courses run in the same centre. Community awareness drives are also educating the communities to eradicate social evils and bring change. Advocating for the children and facilitating the actualization of their rights is a prime focus of the intervention.

Rehabilitating a vulnerable child to residential home, mainstreaming of 8 children to schools and providing platform to girls from the community to expose their talents on various forums rank as the three objectives that the intervention has successfully achieved. With an increasing expanse of the initiative it is expected that life of many more children will be enlightened.
