Nityananda Biswas of Child Rights project in Basirhat receives Bir Purush Award 2022.

November 22, 2022

Nityananda Biswas aged 14 years, comes from a farmer family, living in Kolapata village of Gachha Akharpur Panchayet at Basithat. He is a student of Class-IX at Itinda Union High School. He is also a member of the Child Club in his village under our Child Rights project

Nityananda is always ready to come forward to help people in the community. On 13th August 2022, he received an information regarding a 6 years old child named Meghna Sarkar who was suffering from Alimentary Canal disease. After preliminary enquiry, Nityananda came to know that the doctors have suggested surgical intervention considering the girls condition. They also prescribed some medicines and diagnostic tests prior to operation. The girl’s father works as a landless agricultural labour and is the only earning member in the family. The family did not have the provision of affording Meghna’s surgical operation. As such, it was difficult for the family to continue with Meghna’s treatment.

On 14th of August, Nityananda took a lead to help the treatment of his neighbour. He shared the condition of Meghna with his family members, friends and other community members, asking everyone for help. Motivated by the young boy’s social responsibility at this young age, residents of their village and members of the local club come forward and gave some money to Nityananda. This way, Nityananda collected Rs. 1,600/- and gave all the money to Meghna’s father. With this money all the medicines were bought and tests were done. However, Nityananda and Meghna’s family kept worrying about the child’s operation cost which was nearly Rs. 20,000/- rupees.

A week after beginning to take medicines, Meghna started to show signs of improvement. On 22nd August, Nityananda and Meghna’s parents brought the girl to Basirhat Sadar Hospital. After conducting Ultrasonography, doctors of the hospital recommended Meghna to continue with the medicines. At present, Meghna is under periodic supervision of the doctors. They have suggested that considering the speedy response of medicines, surgery will not be required.

The act of Nityananda Biswas was brought to the notice of West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR). On 20th November 2022, the commission bestowed the Bravery Award 2022 to Nityananda Biswas for his selfless and empathetic act.
