Changing minds; An awareness programme with a difference
KMWSC believes that education and knowledge of trafficking among all members of society are key to beating human traffickers.KMWSC realizes that that without involving community members and common people, the government cannot curb human trafficking. Its very important that people should come forward to join hands to fight against this inhuman and illegal practice in combined manner.
Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre reached out to approximately 140 women from Hatpukuria and Dighirpaar Gram Panchayat through 2 community awareness programmes on child protection issues. This programme was organized under the banner of Sensitization of Anti Human Trafficking Project. The vices of child marriage, human trafficking and child labour were discussed during these awareness programmes.
A mass awareness drive was initiated through an auto campaign on 8th June at Canning 1, Joynagar 1, Mathurapur 1 & Kultoli Blocks of South 24 Parganas District; on West Bengal Child Protection Day ie on the 9th June. Besides sensitizing people on the vicious circle of Human Trafficking, it was also aimed at sourcing for cases on Human Trafficking, in and around the community.
The mass awareness drive organized by KMWSC is very crucial at a time where 55 per cent of those missing are girls and 45 per cent of all missing children have remained untraceable till now, raising fears of them having been either killed or pushed into begging or prostitution rackets According to the National Crime Records Bureau, every eight minutes a child goes missing in India, of which 40 per cent have not been found.
