Third Phase Nawada Intervention by KMWSC

June 29, 2018

Prevention is better than cure. As an extended initiative of Brick Field School Project under KMWSC, the team of 3 started their journey to Nawada, Bihar on 24th June 2018. The brick field project is working for the safe migration, preventing children in migrating to brick kilns of West Bengal by mainstreaming them in their own village schools, Kasturba Gandhi Residential Schools for girls at source areas. It requires lots of advocacy with local administration, education department, block development officers, headmasters, schools and panchayats; awareness and sensitization with the village people, families and communities. It takes time to lobby, negotiate and rapport building with the govt. Officials, headmasters and local leaders but the familiarity with the parents and children prevails because of several meeting and learning centres in the brick kilns of West Bengal. The children and parents do listen the team and welcome them in their community happily.

On day 1 the team visited two villages (Lodipur & Nanauri) in Akbarpur Block in district of Nawada. They met with parents and motivated them to admit their children in the school. After motivational and inspiring talk the parents and leaders of the village were determi9nd to admit the children in the schools. 8 children were admitted in primary school and 7 children were at ICDS in Lodipur village. 9 children were admitted in primary school and 10 children at ICDS in Nanauri village. These children will be followed up in next visit.

On day 2 the team visited the village named Chandra Shekhar Nagar Belaru in Hisua Block. Where we found 22 children in 6 families. Out of 22, 8 children were admitted in different classes of primary school, 10 children in ICDS. 4 children were found above 13 years of age. The awareness on RTE and Safe migration was conducted in the village. The parents were happy to see the team in their village and cooperated all the way possible for networking and advocacy.

On day 3 the team visited Eruri village in Pakribarawan Block where they admitted 45 children in middle school. The team also admitted 27 children in ICDS centre. The team met Lausi and her parents and discussed about KG Home. During the discussion we came to know that Lausi who was admitted to KGBV does not want to go back in KGBV because she is only girl from that village to stay in KGBV. The team met another parents and convinced them to admit their girl in KGBV.

This initiative is recognized now in Nawada district of Bihar by the officials and local administration. The advocacy and networking of KMWSC has been spreading far and wide for the cause of children and families.
