In 2020, because of the pandemic situation and the nationwide lockdown, several families, especially the daily wage earners, lost their livelihood. Sustenance became a major issue for the families.
As a socially responsible Organisation, KMWSC could not watch the situation from the sidelines. It took up the onerous task of supporting the families throughout its various project locations by distributing ration, safety kits and several other items.
In the same year, when the lockdown was just relaxed and life began to reel back in the neo-normal situation, the tropical cyclone “Amphan” struck its blow in the deltaic region of the Gangetic plain, extending up to Kolkata. This was a double disaster for the families, who were already struggling for their survival. In this situation also, KMWSC stood beside its beneficiaries at all locations, beginning from the Sunderban areas in South 24 Parganas, extending up to the brickfields of Kalyani in Nadia district. These gave rise to a new thematic area of functioning – “Pandemic & Disaster Management”.
In 2021, during the second phase of Covid-19, KMWSC continued to provide support to the underprivileged families by distributing ration kits, grocery items, baby food, safety kits and several other items throughout its project locations. The Organisation further provided freshly cooked meals to affected families in Kolkata for a continuous period of 50 days.
In the same year, when cyclone Yash struck once again in the southern region of the state, KMWSC stood beside the victims with ration and other materials for temporary shelters. The Organisation also helped to construct some of the houses which were completely destroyed by the cyclone.
While we pray that the need for our intervention never arises, we remain prepared to once again stand beside the victims if such disaster ever takes place.
