Empowering Brickfield Communities through Organic Sack Farming

Welcome to the Organic Sack Farming Project, a transformative initiative by Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) that blends sustainability, food security, and community empowerment in the heart of brickfield communities.

Amidst the smoke-filled surroundings of the brick kilns in Basirhat, countless migrant labourer families struggle daily against poverty, exploitation, displacement, and hunger. With little or no cultivable land in their native villages and limited livelihood opportunities, many are compelled to migrate seasonally to the brickfields, where access to nutritious food and dignified living conditions remains a constant challenge.

The Organic Sack Farming Project was born as a response to this reality – a simple yet powerful initiative that turns small spaces into sources of nourishment and hope. Using reusable sacks as makeshift farms, families are trained to grow fresh vegetables organically right beside their temporary homes. The project promotes environmentally sustainable farming practices while enabling families to access healthy food at minimal cost.

More than farming, this initiative nurtures confidence, dignity, and self-reliance. Families are empowered with practical agricultural skills that help them supplement nutrition, reduce dependency, and reconnect with the idea of growth and possibility even in the harshest living conditions.

Building on the success and experience gained in the brickfields of Basirhat, the project expanded from November 2025 to selected brickfield communities in Kalyani of Nadia district and Achhipur (Budge Budge) in South 24 Parganas, extending its impact to even more vulnerable migrant families.

Today, the Organic Sack Farming Project stands as a living example of how small interventions can create meaningful change. Every sack planted carries the promise of a healthier meal, a stronger family, and a more hopeful tomorrow.

Join us as we continue cultivating resilience, one sack at a time.
