Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) observed World Day Against Child Labour 2026 across multiple project locations, bringing together children, community members, local leaders, educators, and stakeholders to advocate for a future free from child labour. Guided by this year’s theme, “Red Card Against Child Labour: Fair environments and opportunities for children, and dignified employment for adults,” the programmes emphasised the collective responsibility of protecting children’s rights and ensuring their access to education, safety, and opportunities for holistic development.
Under the Identity Project, the day was celebrated in collaboration with KMC School, Dhapa, with the participation of 45 children. The programme featured energetic dance dramas, cultural performances, speeches, and group songs that highlighted the harmful effects of child labour and the importance of education.
The Kolkata Slums Project organised awareness activities in New Alipore, engaging children and community members in discussions on child rights and the need to eliminate child labour. Similar awareness initiatives were conducted within the red-light area community, where children, residents, and project staff came together to reinforce the message that every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment free from exploitation.
At Itinda Panitor GP area, the Surokhit Shaishav (Child Rights) Project organised a campaign attended by the Gram Panchayat Pradhan, representatives of the Border Security Force (BSF), ASHA workers, Community Committee members, and local residents. The programme focused on building awareness and encouraging community action towards the eradication of child labour.
Meanwhile, under the Naya Disha Project, an awareness programme was conducted at Sardar Sahapur ICDS Centre (270), Hingalganj. Community members participated in discussions on child rights, education, and the importance of creating supportive environments for children while ensuring dignified livelihoods for adults.
Through these collective efforts, KMWSC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding childhoods and promoting a society where every child can learn, grow, and dream without the burden of labour.
“Every child deserves a childhood, not a workplace.”
