Between 30th August and 8th September 2025, the Brickfield School (BFS) team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) carried out a series of impactful interventions across Nawada district, Bihar, under its Source Area Intervention programme. These activities aimed to support the children of migrant families and their communities through education, awareness, and welfare initiatives.
The team held extensive meetings with the District Education Department, DIET officials, school authorities, and labour department representatives, ensuring strong institutional cooperation. Over this period, study materials and Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) were distributed to hundreds of children across government schools, including those in Bhagwanpur, Paharpur, Tetaria, Jhiktaura, Kabirpur, Aruri, and other villages. Children of these schools had returned from the brickfields and mainstreamed thereafter. Hygiene kits were also distributed to children, adolescents, and community members to promote health and dignity.
Awareness sessions were conducted on social issues, child rights, personal hygiene, education, and government schemes, reaching mothers’ groups, adolescents, and entire communities. At several Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) residential homes, the team organised interactive programmes and successfully mainstreamed children back into formal education, including admissions to higher classes.
Special focus was given to Eknar Model Village, where mothers, adolescents, and children actively participated in group sessions, daily learning activities, and discussions on adult education and livelihood opportunities. The DIET resource person’s engagement added depth to the training and awareness drives.
The cooperation extended by the District Education Department and district administration was crucial in facilitating these efforts, for which KMWSC remains deeply grateful.
Through this intensive field engagement, the BFS team reaffirmed its mission: ensuring that children of migrant families are not left behind but are empowered with education, awareness, and hope for a brighter future.
“From source to destination, every child deserves a future filled with learning and dignity.”
