Strengthening Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts Through Community Sensitisation

  • 22 Feb 2025 - 22 Feb 2025
  • Basirhat, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

On 22nd February 2025, the Anti-Human Trafficking (AHT) team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) successfully conducted a sensitisation program at Basirhat under the AHT and Leadership and Empowerment of Survivors (LES) Project. This crucial awareness session brought together key stakeholders, including District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) North 24 Parganas, local police, Border Security Force (BSF), District Legal Services Authority (DALSA), school authorities, ICDS workers, and Panchayat members.
The objective of the session was to enhance the understanding of human trafficking, child protection laws, and the critical role of community intervention in preventing exploitation. The team facilitated interactive discussions, shedding light on real-life trafficking cases, warning signs, legal frameworks such as the POCSO Act and JJ Act, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration in combating trafficking networks.
Law enforcement officers and legal representatives provided insights into the legal procedures for rescuing victims, filing cases, and ensuring proper rehabilitation. Panchayat members and school authorities were encouraged to act as first responders, identifying and reporting any suspicious activities in their communities. The session also emphasised the role of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) workers in offering early intervention and support to children.
A significant highlight of the program was the recognition received from Gabodda High School, who presented an appreciation memento to the KMWSC team for their dedicated efforts in protecting and empowering local communities. This gesture reaffirmed the impact of KMWSC’s work and the importance of sustained awareness initiatives.
KMWSC remains committed to building safer communities through continuous advocacy, legal support, and capacity-building initiatives. The organisation will continue to strengthen partnerships with law enforcement, educational institutions, and grassroots organisations to eradicate human trafficking and safeguard the rights of the vulnerable.
