: St. Bakhita Day: Standing for Dignity, Freedom, and a Life Free from Trafficking

On 8 February 2026, St. Bakhita Day was observed across multiple project locations to honour the life, courage, and enduring legacy of St. Josephine Bakhita, a symbol of resilience and hope for survivors of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. The day brought together mothers, children, adolescents, survivors, Community Vigilance Committee (CVC) members, youth groups, and persons with disabilities (PWD) in collective reflection and action.

Across the red-light area projects, the observance created space for meaningful discussions and activities that highlighted the harsh realities faced by trafficking survivors and the urgent need to uphold dignity, freedom, and protection for every individual. Participants reflected on St. Bakhita’s journey of suffering, faith, and inner strength, drawing inspiration to stand united against exploitation and injustice.

At Basirhat, under the AHT and LES Projects, St. Bakhita Day was celebrated with enthusiastic participation from survivors, CVC members, adolescents, and youth groups. The programme focused on spreading awareness about human trafficking, while reinforcing values of dignity, resilience, and empowerment. The sessions encouraged unity and collective responsibility in creating safer, more inclusive communities.

Similarly, at Baruipur under the Silver Lining Project, CVC members, youth, adolescents, and persons with disabilities actively participated in the celebration. The programme highlighted St. Josephine Bakhita’s lifelong commitment to freedom, compassion, and service to the poor and marginalised. Through discussions and shared reflections, participants renewed their resolve to stand against human trafficking and to support survivors in reclaiming their lives with confidence and hope.

Across all locations, the observance served as a powerful reminder that collective awareness and action are essential to building a just and humane society where every life is valued and protected.
