On 3rd July 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) conducted a mass awareness session on menstrual health and hygiene followed by the free distribution of sanitary pads at Jana Kalyan School, Dhapa in Kolkata. The initiative was held under the broader mission of promoting health, dignity, and empowerment among adolescent girls in underserved areas.
The session aimed to break taboos surrounding menstruation and provide scientifically accurate information about menstrual hygiene management. The discussion was kept interactive and age-appropriate, helping the girls open up about questions and doubts often left unspoken. Key topics included the biological process of menstruation, the importance of maintaining cleanliness, using sanitary products safely, and how to manage menstruation in school settings without fear or shame.
The awareness programme was followed by the distribution of free sanitary pads to all adolescent students, ensuring not just knowledge but access to safe menstrual products. For the students, it was their first time receiving such support in a school environment, and the response was both emotional and inspiring.
Teachers and community members also lent their voices to the importance of creating a supportive ecosystem for adolescent health. The event ended with a reaffirmation of KMWSC’s commitment to reaching more girls with menstrual hygiene education and supplies.
This initiative marks a small yet powerful step in ensuring that no girl is held back because of a natural, biological process — and that every girl has the right to feel safe, informed, and confident.
Empowering girls with knowledge, dignity, and care — one pad at a time.
