On 29th May 2026, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) conducted a hands-on training programme on Organic Sack Farming at Kalyani, Nadia district, bringing together 71 participants from 7 Brickfield centres. The session was designed to promote sustainable agriculture practices and healthy food habits among migrant brickfield communities.
The programme opened with an engaging discussion on food habits – exploring the difference between nutritious and harmful dietary choices and their effects on the body. This was followed by an introduction to the concept of sack based agriculture in limited spaces, highlighting how families with little or no land can still grow their own food. Participants then learned about the specific benefits of Sack Farming as a practical, low-cost solution for urban and semi-urban communities.
The highlight of the session was a practical, hands-on activity where participants were encouraged to prepare sacks, practise seeding, and learn correct watering techniques. The interactive methodology ensured that learning went beyond theory, building real confidence and skill among the participants.
A particularly inspiring moment came at the close of the training, when approximately 4 kg of Red Amaranth and 2.5 kg of Water Spinach, freshly harvested from sacks lovingly tended by selected participating families of the Organic Sack Farming Project, were distributed among the parents. This living proof of the project's success was accompanied by a discussion on the rich nutritional value of these leafy greens, reinforcing the powerful connection between growing one's own food and living a healthier life.
