On 13th May 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre’s Naya Disha team conducted a first-of-its-kind awareness programme at Sererati Health Centre in Hingalganj, aimed at empowering adolescents and mothers with knowledge and dialogue on critical social issues.
Graced by the presence of Mrs. Chanda Das, Community Health Officer (CHO), and Mrs. Keya Biswas, 1st Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), the session was an engaging and impactful interaction focused on building awareness around child rights, women’s issues, and the role of community support.
The session began with an introduction to KMWSC’s mission and activities, followed by an interactive discussion on Human Rights and the four foundational pillars of Child Rights — Survival, Protection, Development, and Participation. Special emphasis was laid on the dangers of early marriage and early pregnancy, which continue to threaten the well-being of adolescent girls in the region.
Additionally, the session addressed the realities of domestic violence, guiding participants on how to recognise abuse, the importance of speaking out, and the existing reporting mechanisms and support systems available to women and girls facing violence.
This programme marked a significant step in fostering open dialogue and sowing the seeds of empowerment through knowledge, especially for women and young girls living in vulnerable, remote areas. The positive reception from both the adolescents and mothers reaffirms our commitment to building safer, informed, and resilient communities.
“Awareness is the first step toward empowerment — and every voice counts.”
