On 24th June 2025, the Tribal Community Development and Empowerment Project team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) organised an awareness programme on Menstrual Health and Hygiene at Gangasagar, with the participation of 25 mothers and adolescent girls from the local community.

The session aimed to break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation and empower women and girls with accurate information and practical knowledge about menstrual hygiene. Many of the participants came from vulnerable backgrounds where taboos and myths still influence health behaviours and access to proper menstrual care.

The facilitators used simple language, illustrations, and real-life examples to explain the biological process of menstruation, its impact on girls’ education and mental well-being, and the importance of maintaining hygiene during periods. Demonstrations on the proper use and disposal of sanitary products were also included. Special attention was given to addressing commonly held misconceptions and encouraging open conversations between mothers and daughters.

Participants were encouraged to share their own experiences, which helped create a safe and supportive space for learning and unlearning. The session concluded with the distribution of sanitary napkins and an open Q&A segment, where the women and girls clarified doubts without fear or judgment.

Such initiatives continue to play a crucial role in building healthier, informed, and more confident communities — especially in remote areas where access to reproductive health education is limited.
