Prerona (Inspiration) Project Launched to Empower Children with Special Needs

On 5 March 2026, the Prerona (Inspiration) Project was officially launched at Basirhat–I, marking an important step towards strengthening disability inclusion and support for children with special needs within the programmes of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC). The launch programme was attended by representatives from District Society for Training & Research on Panchayats & Rural Development (STARPARD), an ex-member of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the Panchayat Pradhan, ICDS Supervisor, community members, and several children with special needs along with their parents.

The Prerona Project aims to empower children with special needs by creating an enabling and inclusive environment where they can grow with dignity, confidence, and opportunities for holistic development. The initiative focuses on building awareness within communities to foster acceptance and understanding, while encouraging families and local stakeholders to actively participate in supporting these children.

Through this project, children with special needs will receive various forms of support including therapeutic sessions, access to assistive devices and family counselling. The programme also aims to enhance social interaction and emotional well-being among the children, helping them build confidence and participate more actively in community life.

An important component of the project is the promotion of cross-learning and documentation, enabling the sharing of knowledge and experiences across KMWSC projects. By strengthening the capacity of community members and project teams, the initiative seeks to ensure long-term sustainability and wider inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The launch of Prerona reflects KMWSC’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind and that every child, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive in a supportive community.
