On 29th October 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) conducted the Phase II Handicraft Training under the Lotus Child Project, conducted at the organisation’s training facilities at Kolkata, bringing together mothers and adolescents from the Sundarbans for a day of creativity, learning, and empowerment.
The session focused on hands-on fabric work, where participants learned to design and embellish dupattas with handmade tassels, showcasing their artistic flair and growing craftsmanship. Each creation reflected the participants’ personal touch and sense of accomplishment, turning simple materials into beautiful works of art.
In addition to the practical training, a motivational session on freelancing and self-employment was conducted to inspire women to convert their skills into sustainable livelihood opportunities. The discussion introduced them to the possibilities of working independently, marketing handmade products, and finding purpose through creativity and financial independence.
The mothers expressed immense joy and gratitude, sharing how such training sessions not only enhance their skills but also build their self-confidence and decision-making abilities. For many, this experience symbolised a step toward greater economic agency and empowerment.
KMWSC continues to stand beside these women, nurturing their talents and supporting their journey toward self-reliance.
“Every stitch they weave is a step toward independence, dignity, and hope.”
