On 8th and 9th June 2026, a two-day Capacity Building Training Programme on safe internet usage and cyber safety was conducted under the Kolkata Slums Project. The training commenced at the KMWSC office and concluded at the New Alipore Centre, bringing together 20 adolescents from urban slum communities for an engaging and informative learning experience.
In today's increasingly connected world, young people are among the most active users of the internet – yet often the most vulnerable to its risks. Recognising this, the programme was designed to equip adolescents with the awareness, tools, and confidence needed to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
The sessions covered a range of critical themes, including responsible online behaviour, digital security practices, identifying and avoiding cyber risks, and effective strategies for protecting oneself in virtual spaces. Facilitator used interactive discussions, group activities, video clippings and real-life scenarios to make the learning relatable and practical. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their own digital habits and think critically about the content they encounter and share online.
By the close of the two-day programme, the 20 participating adolescents demonstrated a noticeably stronger understanding of online safety. Many expressed greater confidence in recognising potential threats such as cyberbullying, online predators, and misinformation, and in knowing how and where to seek help when needed. The training also sparked meaningful peer conversations, suggesting that the learning would continue well beyond the classroom.
This initiative reflects KMWSC's commitment to empowering young people not just in the physical world, but in the digital spaces they increasingly inhabit every day.
“Smart online choices, safer digital futures.”
