Mainstreaming Children & Raising Community Awareness in Basirhat

  • Basirhat-I Block, North 24 Parganas

Event Start Date: 01/07/2025

Event End Date: 30/07/2025

In a continued effort to support migrant families working in the brickfields of Basirhat-I Block (North 24 Parganas), a comprehensive initiative was undertaken in throughout July 2025 (1st to 30th July) to both mainstream children into government schools and raise awareness among communities about vital welfare schemes.
A total of 107 children (54 boys and 53 girls) were successfully enrolled in nearby government-run primary and higher secondary schools. The enrolment was carefully based on age-appropriate placement and proximity to residences, ensuring children previously affected by seasonal migration and poverty were brought back into the fold of formal education. These children were mainstreamed into 15 different government schools across the region, including Panitar High School, Dhaltita Milan Mandir High School, Subidpur F.P. School, Itinda Girls High School, and others.
Simultaneously, village-level awareness meetings were conducted in different villages to empower parents and caregivers with information about government welfare schemes. Key topics included enrolment under the Sasthya Sathi (Health) Card and accessing various state-supported social protection schemes. These sessions served as a critical link between the families and the entitlements they often remain unaware of, helping bridge the gap between need and service delivery.
Villages covered during the initiative included Akharpur, Panitar, Subidpur, Nalkara, Tantra, Pairpara, Itinda, and more. Community visits involved direct interaction with parents and coordination with school authorities, to ensure smooth transitions for the children.
This dual-pronged approach — strengthening education and promoting access to social services — paves the way for a more inclusive and secure future for these migrant communities.

From Brickfields to Classrooms, and Awareness to Empowerment.
