Following a significant breakthrough in outreach efforts on 7th July 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) commenced a week-long field intervention in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, reaching out to children of seasonal migrant families recently returned from brickfields in West Bengal.

From 7th to 11th July, the Brickfield School Project team visited more than 10 villages across five administrative blocks — Chaibasa, Manjhari, Goilkera, Bandgaon, and Chakradharpur. The primary objective was to reintegrate children into formal education systems, many of whom had missed several months of schooling due to their families' migration for brick kiln work.

With support from local schools and community members, 79 children were successfully mainstreamed into 8 government schools. The team conducted meetings with head teachers to ensure that academic support and follow-up would be available to help these children adjust and remain in school.

In parallel, awareness sessions were held with parents, adolescent girls, and youth to highlight the importance of continuous education, the dangers of early marriage and child labour, and steps for safe migration. Several families also received information on accessing government schemes such as the E-Shram Card and Ayushman Bharat Health Card.

Community response was particularly encouraging in villages like Baidisai and Jombro, where many parents came forward voluntarily to enrol their children.

KMWSC remains grateful to the District Education Department and the district administration for their cooperation and encouragement, which played a key role in enabling this effort.

This intervention marks a critical first step in KMWSC’s expanded Source Area efforts in Jharkhand — working to close the education gap for children from migrant families and support their long-term development.
