On 25th July 2025, the Brickfield School Project team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) marked a meaningful step forward in its Model Village Initiative by introducing an Adult Education Programme and a Vocational Tailoring Training for mothers, youth, and adolescents at the Resource Centre in Eknar village of Hisua Block, Nawada district, Bihar.
This initiative specifically focuses on empowering members of the Mushahair community, one of the most socio-economically marginalised groups in the region. Designed as a dual intervention — foundational literacy for adults and hands-on tailoring for income generation — the programme seeks to break the cycle of exclusion and equip learners with knowledge and practical skills that can bring meaningful change to their lives.
The launch saw overwhelming participation and excitement, with the community — especially women and adolescents — expressing deep enthusiasm to learn, grow, and become self-reliant. Many of the mothers present shared their aspirations of being able to read, write, and eventually earn an income through tailoring. The tailoring course will not only provide them with a skill, but also boost their confidence and strengthen their role in household decision-making.
The Adult Education component aims to address the basic literacy gaps among adults, many of whom were never enrolled in school due to poverty, migration, or entrenched social barriers. Trained facilitators from the local community will deliver the sessions, making learning more accessible and culturally rooted.
This initiative is not just about literacy and tailoring — it’s about opening doors to dignity, independence, and hope.
