Empowering Women through Skills: Candle-Making Workshop under MIST Project

On 21st and 22nd August 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) organised a capacity-building workshop on candle making (Level I) for women from the MIST project in Matia and Sonagachi. The two-day programme aimed at creating alternative livelihood opportunities and building financial independence for women engaged in sex work, offering them a pathway to dignity and empowerment.

The workshop introduced participants to the art of producing decorative and aromatic candles, combining both creativity and skill. With hands-on training, the women gained confidence in handling raw materials, mixing fragrances, shaping designs, and finishing products with market appeal. Trainers emphasised that these candles hold great potential for home-based enterprises, especially during festive seasons like Diwali, when demand is high.

Beyond the technical aspect, the programme was designed to foster self-belief and resilience. Through group interactions and practical exercises, participants shared their aspirations, discussed marketing strategies, and explored how such skills can open new avenues of income generation. The initiative reinforced the importance of financial stability and the ability to have control over one’s own earnings.

For many participants, this was their first exposure to skill-based training beyond their current livelihood. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn reflected a strong desire to explore alternative ways of sustaining themselves and their families.

By linking skill development with empowerment, KMWSC strives to create sustainable opportunities that go beyond immediate income — fostering long-term change, dignity, and independence.
