In a vibrant display of dedication to transformative education, the Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre recently hosted a dynamic 4-day Barefoot Teachers’ Training Program from September 9th to 12th, 2025. This immersive initiative brought together 25 passionate educators (8 male and 17 female participants) from diverse community backgrounds, all united by a shared commitment to nurturing young minds in underserved areas. As the program unfolded at KMWSC, it served as a beacon of hope, equipping grassroots teachers with practical tools to foster inclusive and child-centred learning environments.
The journey commenced on a note of inspiration, opening with a heartfelt prayer that set a tone of unity and reflection. Participants then engaged in interactive presentations, sharing insights on the essential qualities of a good teacher — such as empathy, adaptability, and patience — and the unique characteristics of children, highlighting their curiosity, resilience, and need for holistic support. This foundational exchange sparked meaningful dialogues, laying the groundwork for the deeper explorations ahead.
Over the four intensive days, the training delved into a rich tapestry of critical topics designed to bridge theory and practice. Sessions unpacked the concepts of equity and equality, emphasising how fair opportunities can dismantle barriers in education. Discussions on punishment and reward challenged traditional approaches, advocating for positive reinforcement that builds intrinsic motivation. Participants gained hands-on knowledge of learning levels in language and mathematics, alongside baseline assessments to tailor instruction effectively. A pivotal highlight was the introduction to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and child rights, empowering teachers to champion dignity and protection in every classroom.
Practical skills took centre stage with workshops on classroom management techniques, ensuring engaging and orderly spaces for growth. Creativity flourished through story-making and storytelling sessions, where educators crafted narratives to captivate young learners. Action rhythms and learning games injected energy and fun, demonstrating how play enhances retention. The program culminated in the preparation of Teaching-Learning Materials (TLM), enabling participants to develop low-cost, innovative resources from everyday items.
The training drew to a close with an open feedback session, where voices echoed appreciation for the program's relevance and impact, followed by a joyous certification ceremony. Certificates in hand, these "barefoot teachers" emerged not just skilled, but inspired — ready to ripple change through their communities.
