Creativity, Tradition and Festive Joy: Celebrating Durga Puja Through Skill and Community

  • Dulki Village, Sundarban

As Durga Puja approaches, bringing with it the colours, creativity and warmth of Bengal's most cherished celebration, the Lotus Child Project at Dulki village in Sundarban created a special opportunity for mothers and adolescent girls to share in the festive spirit. On 5 October 2026, the mothers' group participated in a handicraft training session that beautifully brought together traditional devotion and creative skill.

The session focused on fabric painting, with participants learning to paint the face of Durga Maa on blouses. What began as a practical handicraft activity soon became a joyful expression of creativity and devotion. As the participants carefully worked with colours and designs, the activity provided them with an opportunity to learn a new skill while connecting it with a celebration deeply rooted in the cultural life of Bengal.

The training also reflected the project's commitment to creating opportunities for women to develop practical and creative abilities. Such activities can nurture confidence, encourage self-expression and potentially open avenues for income generation through handmade products.

The festive joy extended beyond the training session. Sarees were distributed among members of the adolescent group, adding a thoughtful touch to the celebrations and ensuring that the young participants could also experience the happiness and dignity associated with the festival.

For communities facing economic and social challenges, moments of celebration can carry a meaning far beyond the festivities themselves. They create spaces where women and girls can feel valued, included and connected to their culture and community.

Through creativity, learning and a simple gesture of sharing, the Lotus Child Project helped make the festive season a little brighter, reminding everyone that the joy of celebration is most meaningful when it reaches every heart.

“Where creativity meets tradition, every celebration becomes a little more beautiful.”
