On 9th August 2025, the lanes of Sonagachi came alive with warmth, colours, and smiles as adolescent group members and children from the red-light area celebrated Raksha Bandhan under the joint initiative of the Sohochori Project and the Providing Education and Protection to Vulnerable Children Project.
The event aimed to go beyond the traditional exchange of Rakhis, bringing joy, love, and a renewed sense of protection and responsibility among the children and adolescents living in one of the most challenging environments. It became a platform to strengthen bonds of trust and togetherness within the community — a reminder that everyone has a role in protecting and supporting one another.
The celebration was filled with laughter, friendly banter, and heartfelt exchanges of Rakhis, symbolising mutual respect and care. The act of tying a Rakhi went hand in hand with meaningful conversations about the importance of safeguarding one another, especially in at-risk communities.
Through this celebration, the children were encouraged to embrace values of unity, empathy, and mutual respect, which are essential in fostering a supportive and protective environment. The festival also helped break barriers, reinforcing that despite challenges, a community can come together to celebrate traditions that uphold dignity and solidarity.
As the event concluded, the smiling faces of the children reflected a deeper understanding — that Raksha Bandhan is not only about a brother-sister bond but about standing by each other in times of need and nurturing a safe, caring community.
“Tying threads of love, weaving a circle of safety.”
