The International Day of the Girl Child is a reminder that every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, make her own choices and shape her future with confidence. In this spirit, KMWSC marked the occasion through two meaningful celebrations that brought together awareness, participation, education and skill development.
On 12 October, the Tribal Community Development and Empowerment Project celebrated the day at Gangasagar, Sundarban, bringing together 80 mothers and daughters. The programme created a space for dialogue on child rights, education and the importance of ending child marriage. A spirited street march, with participants carrying banners and placards, took these messages into the community. A particularly touching moment came through a blindfold activity in which daughters identified their mothers simply by touch, celebrating the special bond between them. The programme concluded with encouraging conversations about higher education and financial independence for girls.
On 13 October, KMWSC continued the celebrations through the Skill Development Project. The occasion marked an important milestone as thirteen Beautician trainees and six Fashion Designing and Tailoring trainees received certificates recognising their successful completion of training.
The celebration also showcased the creativity and skills of the tailoring trainees through a vibrant fashion show. They proudly presented sarees they had created using tie and dye and block printing techniques, transforming their newly acquired skills into expressions of creativity, achievement and confidence.
Together, the celebrations highlighted two essential dimensions of empowerment: knowing one's rights and having the skills and opportunities to pursue one's aspirations. From Gangasagar to Kolkata, they reaffirmed KMWSC's commitment to building a world where every girl can learn without barriers, grow without fear and pursue her dreams without limitation.
Empowering girls requires more than a day of celebration. It calls for continued investment in their education, protection, skills and opportunities, alongside families and communities that believe in their potential. KMWSC remains committed to nurturing these possibilities, so that every girl has the freedom, confidence and means to shape her own future and contribute to a more equal and inclusive society.
Every girl deserves the right to dream, the opportunity to thrive and the freedom to shape her future.
