Building Strong Foundations: 4-Day Barefoot Teachers Training Programme

On 16th, 17th, 21st, and 23rd April 2026, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) successfully conducted a 4-day Barefoot Teachers Training Programme, aimed at strengthening the skills and understanding of grassroots educators working in community learning spaces.

The training covered a comprehensive range of topics essential for effective teaching, including children’s characteristics, qualities of a good teacher, and classroom management techniques. Participants were also introduced to creative and engaging methods such as story-making and storytelling, use of Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs), card games, and action rhymes, enabling them to make learning more joyful and interactive for children.

In addition to academic approaches, the sessions placed strong emphasis on child protection and rights-based education. Key topics included the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), child rights, child abuse awareness, and the concepts of equality and equity. These discussions helped educators understand their critical role in creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.

The programme was highly interactive, encouraging participants to actively engage, share experiences, and learn through practice. This participatory approach not only enhanced their understanding but also built confidence in applying these methods in their classrooms.

Overall, the training served as an important step towards empowering grassroots educators with practical skills and knowledge, enabling them to nurture children through more inclusive, engaging, and child-friendly educational practices.
