Building Futures Beyond Bricks: Education Drive reaches 251 Children in Nawada

  • Nawada District, Bihar

Start date: 24/07/2025
End date: 01/08/25
From 24th July to 1st August 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) undertook a transformative Source Area Intervention in Nawada District, Bihar, under its Brickfield School Project. This initiative was driven by a single goal — to bridge the educational gap for children of migrant families who return home after working seasons in brick kilns of West Bengal.

Over nine days, the team covered 15 villages across six blocks — including Eknar, Panchgawan, Paharpur, Hardia, Aruri, Atari, Bhagwanpur-Kabirpur, Purnadih, Gangta, Derma, Steel Nagar, Lalaunagar, Pasardri, and Jhitkaura. Through door-to-door visits and school-level coordination, 251 children were successfully mainstreamed into government schools, ICDS centres, KGBV Homes for girla and NSCB Residential Homes for boys. This achievement reflects KMWSC’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted education for migrant children.

The programme combined school enrolment drives with community awareness meetings in eight villages, sensitising families about the importance of continuous education, risks of child labour and early marriage, safe migration practices, and government schemes such as E-Shram and Ayushman Bharat. Meetings with parents, Panchayat leaders, and grassroots mobilisers strengthened local ownership of these efforts.

A major highlight was the formal launch of the Adult Education Programme and Vocational Tailoring Training at the Eknar Resource Centre, opening new doors for women and adolescent girls. Practical tests were conducted for tailoring instructors, and the response from women eager to learn literacy and skills was overwhelming.

The team also engaged with labour department officials, held strategy discussions with community leaders, and secured Transfer Certificates for older children to continue higher education.

This mission, made possible through the support of local schools, community stakeholders, and the district administration, marks a significant breakthrough in empowering migrant families through education and awareness.

“A movement for learning, a mission for life – shaping futures in Nawada”
