Beyond the Projects: Stories That Stay with You

Some experiences stay with us long after the journey ends. They are found in the warmth of a child's welcome, the promise of a new livelihood and the courage of people who continue to hope for a better tomorrow. For Edith van Kempen and Yvonne van Kempen from Holland, their visits to KMWSC's project locations on 12 and 15 October 2026 offered glimpses of the lives, aspirations and resilience behind the programmes.

Their journey began in Kalyani on 12 October, where they visited the Brickfield School and Sack Farming Projects. At the brickfields, the children welcomed them warmly, shared moments of play and offered a glimpse into their learning experiences in an environment where access to education can be challenging. Beyond the classroom, the visitors explored the Organic Sack Farming initiative, witnessing how this practical approach to cultivation offers migrant families an opportunity to grow vegetables and explore possibilities for improved food security. Edith described the experience as an “eye-opener”, reflecting the impact of seeing the work and its significance firsthand.

On 15 October, their journey continued to Sonagachi, where they visited the Red Light Project. Meeting mothers and listening to young people brought them closer to the everyday realities, challenges and aspirations of the community. These personal interactions offered a deeper understanding of the importance of creating supportive spaces where women and children can access opportunities, build confidence and look towards a future with greater dignity and hope.

Across both visits, the projects came alive through the people at their heart. The children's enthusiasm, families' aspirations and community members' experiences revealed dimensions of KMWSC's work that figures and formal reports alone cannot fully convey.

Such encounters remind us that meaningful development is not measured only through activities completed or beneficiaries reached. It is also reflected in the relationships built, the possibilities nurtured and the understanding that grows when people take the time to listen and connect.

“Beyond projects and programmes, it is the human connections that leave the deepest mark.”
