Awareness Programme on Child Protection with Mothers and ICDS Workers at Ghojadanga and Itinda

  • 08 Apr 2025 - 08 Apr 2025
  • 10.30am
  • Basirhat, North 24 Parganas.

On 8th April 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), under its Surokhit Shaishav Project, conducted a significant Child Protection Awareness Programme at Ghojadanga and Itinda villages in Basirhat-I Block. The sessions were organised for mothers and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) workers, aiming to build a deeper understanding of child rights, protection frameworks, and community responsibilities in safeguarding children.

The sessions opened with an introduction to the Surokhit Shaishav Project, followed by a detailed discussion on the various forms of child abuse — physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect—and how to recognise early warning signs. The resource persons emphasised the importance of safe home and community environments and highlighted the critical role that mothers and frontline workers like Anganwadi (ICDS) workers play in identifying and addressing child protection concerns.

Through participatory discussions, real-life examples, and role-play, the programme also covered practical steps for reporting child abuse, the role of Child Line (1098), and the significance of coordination between community stakeholders, ICDS, and Child Welfare Committees.

The awareness session not only equipped the mothers and workers with valuable knowledge and skills, but also created a space for them to share their own challenges and experiences in dealing with children’s safety and well-being. The discussions highlighted the need for continued capacity-building and collective community action.
KMWSC remains committed to empowering communities through education and awareness, ensuring that every child lives a life free from violence, exploitation, and neglect.

Together, we can create a protective net around every child — one informed mother, one vigilant worker at a time.
