On 9th May 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) successfully conducted the Tailoring Practical Examinations for students enrolled in the vocational training programme under the Brickfield Schools Project in Basirhat. This skill development initiative is designed to equip adolescent girls, boys and mothers from migrant families with sustainable livelihood skills, promoting self-reliance and empowerment.
A total of 9 adolescent students appeared for the practical examination, held at the tailoring training facilities at KMWSC’s office in Kolkata, showcasing their learning through stitching techniques, garment construction, and pattern drafting. The students performed exceptionally well, reflecting their dedication and the effectiveness of the hands-on training provided over the past months. Transportation arrangements for the students from Basirhat to Kolkata and back was made by the project team.
The tailoring course has been more than just a training module — it has been a path to opportunity. These young learners, balancing education with responsibilities at home and work at the kilns, have embraced this skill as a means of shaping a brighter, more independent future.
The exam also served as a moment of pride for the teachers and facilitators who have supported the girls throughout their journey. Their success underscores the importance of integrating vocational education into non-formal school settings, especially for vulnerable, mobile communities.
By nurturing both academic and practical skills, KMWSC continues to affirm its commitment to holistic education, where dignity, knowledge, and empowerment walk hand in hand.
“Stitch by stitch, we’re weaving dreams into reality.”
