Category: “Award for Courage” – The Telegraph School Award

In the heart of Kaijuri, a small village in North 24 Parganas, lived Priyanka Pramanik, a fifteen-year-old girl whose courageous actions would soon transform her from an ordinary teenager into a beacon of hope for her entire community. Despite her young age, Priyanka displayed an extraordinary level of bravery and wisdom when faced with a situation that could have easily overwhelmed even the most seasoned adults.

Priyanka’s story began in the most unassuming way—through her close friendship with her neighbour and namesake, Priyanka Roy, an eighteen-year-old girl with big dreams and an even bigger heart. Priyanka Roy, raised in a modest household, found herself caught between the simple realities of her rural life and the tantalizing allure of a world she discovered online—a world that seemed full of luxury, love, and opportunities far removed from her everyday existence.

As time passed, the disparity between Priyanka Roy’s dreams and her family’s means created an emotional storm within her. Unable to reconcile her desires with her reality, she made a desperate decision: she vanished from her village, leaving her family and friends in a state of panic and despair. Her disappearance sent shockwaves through the village, with her frantic parents searching every possible place to find her, but their efforts proved futile.

While the village grappled with the uncertainty of Priyanka Roy’s fate, another young girl, Priyanka Pramanik, quietly took it upon herself to unravel the mystery. Driven by her love for her friend and a deep sense of responsibility, Priyanka Pramanik embarked on an investigation of her own. She pieced together clues from conversations with friends, snippets of gossip, and her own instincts, eventually uncovering a shocking truth: Priyanka Roy had been lured away by false promises of love and marriage, ensnared by the dark forces of human trafficking.

Realising the gravity of the situation, Priyanka Pramanik wasted no time. With a maturity beyond her years, she reached out to the Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), an organisation dedicated to combating human trafficking. Armed with the critical information she had gathered, Priyanka Pramanik’s swift actions set into motion a coordinated rescue operation between KMWSC and law enforcement. Thanks to her quick thinking and detailed reporting, Priyanka Roy was found and rescued before she could be lost to a horrific fate.

Today, Priyanka Roy is safe at home, her future intact, thanks to the courage and resolve of her young friend. Priyanka Pramanik’s actions not only saved her friend but also shone a light on the potential for every young person to make a difference, regardless of their age or circumstances. Her story is a powerful reminder that awareness, courage, and swift action can overcome even the most daunting challenges.

Priyanka Pramanik’s heroic deed is more than just an act of bravery—it is a symbol of hope for a future where every child is vigilant and empowered to stand against the sinister schemes of traffickers. Her story deserves to be told and celebrated, not only as a testament to her own courage but as an inspiration for generations to come.

Impact: Priyanka Pramanik’s courageous intervention has set an example in her community, encouraging greater awareness and proactive measures to protect vulnerable individuals from trafficking. Her bravery serves as a reminder that even in the face of overwhelming odds, one person’s courage can change the course of another’s life.
