Candle light Baby Birth

We have heard about Candle light Birthday, but for the first time we experienced candle light baby birth in a brickfield in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal. Mrs. Roshni is one of the migrant labours working in Durga brickfield. She came in Brickfield with 3 kids, husband and father in law. She works as a Rezarar (Brick framing) along with her family. When she migrated from Nawada she was 7.5 months pregnant.

On 21st of January 2021, we received a phone call from one of the Brickfield leading teachers that one pregnant woman had labour pain and intervention was necessary. All 3 leading teachers reached Durga BFS around 5’O clock in the morning. The Project Coordinator also joined the team. We were shocked to see the condition of the house, there was no electricity. Torch of one mobile scarcely lit up the room. There was no other alternative. We switched on our mobile light and managed some candles.
During the first one hour, we tried our best to convince the pregnant woman’s family and Brickfield Munsi for admitting Mrs. Roshni to Hospital for the delivery, but no one agreed. Munsi directly told “No”. He said, “in this corona time we cannot take any risk to go to a government hospital. We have 100 labours In this Brickfield, if she gets corona in hospital during the treatment. Then what will happen here, who will take care of her family, who will take responsibility for treatment and look after her or if she has caesarean baby then who will take care of her, how will she complete the assign work…” Questions were endless. No solution could be arrived at. The pregnant woman’s condition started deteriorating. We took instant decision to call for the local Doctor around 6.30am. Upon arriving, the doctor gave an injection for pain and around 7.51 a.m. the mother gave birth to a baby boy. As good luck would have it, the delivery was normal without requiring any surgical intervention. The mother and new born baby, both are in good health, and out of danger. KMWSC provided all Medical and Nutrition food support to lactating mother and child.
