KMWSC proudly celebrates the courage of a young leader who turned knowledge into action and protected his community
In the remote border village of Gaborda in Basirhat, life for adolescents is shadowed by an unspoken danger. Situated along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the area is marked by poverty, drug abuse, trafficking, and illegal activities that often pull young boys into a devastating cycle. Many teenagers drift toward addiction, manipulated by traffickers who first lure them with substances and then trap them into smuggling networks.
Amid this reality grew 17-year-old Rudra Mondal, a Class XI student whose quiet courage would one day transform his village.
A Turning Point: The SCAR Project Steps Into His Life
Rudra’s life changed the day he joined that Risk : To combat Human Trafficking and Child Abuse) of Kolkata Mary Ward Sociae Adolescent Group under the SCAR Project (Sensitization of Communities l Centre (KMWSC). The sessions opened his eyes to things he had always seen, but never fully understood — how drugs, trafficking, and exploitation were interconnected, and how children were deliberately targeted.
Through discussions, training, and the patient guidance of the KMWSC team, Rudra discovered something powerful: that courage becomes meaningful when guided by awareness and collective action.
From Anger to Strategic Leadership
At first, Rudra wanted to directly confront the drug peddlers. But the KMWSC facilitators helped him understand the risks and encouraged him to channel his energy strategically.
With their mentorship, Rudra reached out to:
Together — supported and guided by KMWSC — the group built a united community front against drug networks that had gone unchecked for years.
This was no small task. But KMWSC continued to walk beside Rudra every step of the way — strengthening youth leadership, mobilising adults, linking institutions, and ensuring the efforts remained safe, structured, and effective.
A Village Awakens
The impact was profound.
With KMWSC’s facilitation:
The atmosphere in Gaborda began to shift. Fear gave way to awareness, silence turned into dialogue, and young voices gained power. Rudra and his adolescent group members even began supporting children whose studies were disrupted due to addiction — helping them rebuild their academic foundation and confidence.
A Youth Leader is Born
Today, Rudra is not just a participant — he is a leader. With KMWSC’s continued support, he conducts awareness sessions in nearby villages, encouraging more adolescents to reject drugs and resist trafficking.
His transformation — from a vulnerable teenager surrounded by danger to a confident youth who protects others — is nothing short of remarkable.
A Well-Deserved Honour
In recognition of his courage and leadership, the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights awarded him the Bravery Award 2025.
For KMWSC, this award is more than a recognition of one boy. It is proof of what becomes possible when young people are guided, empowered, and trusted.
KMWSC’s Message
Rudra, we are proud of you.
Your bravery is shaping a safer future, and your leadership shows what empowered youth can achieve. You are a symbol of hope — not only for Gaborda but for every community fighting the silent battles of addiction and trafficking.
