Arman Sheikh – A Brave Heart Who Stood Against Danger

Location: Matia, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

Category: Birpurush Award by West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights

In the quiet village of Matia in North 24 Parganas, where KMWSC implements its project Sohochori, an 11-year-old boy named Arman Sheikh displayed remarkable courage that not only safeguarded his friends but also demonstrated the power of awareness and quick action in the face of danger.

Arman, a fourth-grade student at Matia Gram Panchayat School, was returning home one afternoon with his four friends, including a 10-year-old girl, after a regular school day. As the children walked along, a seemingly friendly man, appearing to be in his fifties, approached them with an offer to buy chocolates. Trusting his words, the group followed him to a local shop where he fulfilled his promise. However, the encounter took a darker turn when the man led the group into a deserted alley.

It was here that his intentions began to reveal themselves. He tried to separate the youngest of the group, the 10-year-old girl, by enticing her with promises of more food. At first, the children hesitated, unsure of what to do, but Arman’s sharp instincts sensed that something was terribly wrong.

When the man tried to take the girl away, Arman courageously intervened, forbidding her from going with the stranger. The man’s demeanor turned aggressive, and he attempted to justify his actions to the rest of the children. Unconvinced, Arman stood firm, ensuring the group did not lose sight of the little girl.

As the man became forceful, trying to drag the girl away, Arman sprang into action. Grabbing stones from the street, he began pelting the man and shouting loudly for help. His quick thinking and sheer bravery startled the man, who was struck by one of the stones, leaving a visible cut on his forehead. Realising he was outmatched by the courage of a young boy and the growing noise, the man abandoned his attempt and fled the scene.

Without wasting a moment, Arman led his group to safety, ensuring everyone reached home unharmed. Once home, the children recounted the incident to their guardians, who immediately alerted the local police. Despite the man having fled the area, Arman’s actions and detailed account were instrumental in helping authorities understand the severity of the situation and take preventive measures.

A Beacon of Courage and Awareness

Arman Sheikh’s decisive and selfless act of courage in protecting his younger friend from potential harm is a testament to the extraordinary bravery that can reside in the smallest of hearts. His awareness and quick action in a moment of crisis not only prevented a tragic event but also set an example for his peers and community.

In recognition of his bravery, Arman was conferred the Birpurush Award by the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights. This honor celebrates his exceptional courage, presence of mind, and unwavering commitment to his friends’ safety.

Impact

Arman’s story serves as an inspiring reminder that vigilance and bravery are vital in protecting vulnerable individuals from harm. His actions highlight the importance of teaching children to recognise danger and respond assertively, empowering them to act wisely in challenging situations.

Arman Sheikh’s heroic deed is a shining example of what it means to be a protector. His story is a powerful message to children and adults alike that courage, even in the face of fear, can make all the difference in safeguarding lives.
