Voices for Protection: Adolescent Training on Child Rights and Safety

  • 27 Jul 2026
  • New Alipore, Kolkata (Kolkata Slums Project)

Every child grows stronger when equipped with the knowledge to recognise risk and claim their rights. With this belief, the Kolkata Slums Project organised a revamp training session on child protection for adolescents at New Alipore on 27th July 2026, bringing together 21 children and adolescents for a day of learning and reflection.

The session covered a range of critical child protection themes, including child marriage, child labour, cyber safety, the Right to Education (RTE) Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Facilitators guided participants through open discussions on these issues, helping them understand not only the risks involved but also the safeguards and support systems available to them and their peers.

A meaningful part of the day involved direct interaction with beneficiaries, allowing children to voice their own experiences and concerns in a safe, supportive environment. The adolescents were also given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through a short skit performed by the children themselves, creatively conveying key messages on child rights and protection to their peers and facilitators.

The programme also included a meeting with club members, reinforcing the role of peer groups and community structures in sustaining awareness beyond a single training session. This collaborative approach ensured that the messages of the day would continue to resonate within the children's own social circles long after the training concluded.

Through initiatives such as this, the Kolkata Slums Project continues to strengthen the resilience and awareness of adolescents living in vulnerable communities, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.

"Informed children, protected futures."
