Rooted in Purpose: Protecting the Mangroves of the Sundarbans

  • 23 Jul 2026 - 26 Jul 2026
  • Bipradaspur village, Sundarbans

The mangroves of the Sundarbans stand as a natural shield - guarding coastlines, sustaining biodiversity, and holding back the impacts of a changing climate. Recognising their irreplaceable value, the Climate Action and Biodiversity (CAB) Project of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre observed the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem through a three-day awareness drive at Bipradaspur village in Sundarban, held on 23rd, 25th, and 26th July 2026.

Over the course of the programme, 131 community members came together to explore the critical role mangroves play in protecting the Sundarbans' fragile coastline from erosion, storm surges, and rising sea levels. Through interactive discussions and awareness sessions, participants examined how the health of the mangrove ecosystem is closely tied to the survival of local livelihoods, from fishing to farming, and to the broader fight against climate change.

A significant part of the discussions centred on the growing threat of plastic pollution to the Sundarbans' delicate wetlands, with facilitators encouraging participants to rethink everyday waste habits and adopt more sustainable practices within their households and communities. Sessions were designed to be participatory, allowing community members to share their own observations of environmental change over the years and voice concerns about the future of the region they call home.

By the end of the three days, participants left with a renewed sense of responsibility toward the ecosystem that protects and sustains them. The CAB Project's engagement in Bipradaspur reflects KMWSC's continued commitment to building climate-resilient communities across the Sundarbans, where environmental awareness and community action go hand in hand.

Through initiatives such as this, KMWSC reaffirms that safeguarding the Sundarbans' mangroves is not a task for a single day, but a continuing commitment shared by every community that depends on this vital ecosystem.

"Protecting mangroves today, preserving life for tomorrow."
