On 1st April 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) launched the second phase of its Health Intervention Programme, extending essential healthcare services to migrant brickfield communities in Basirhat. The initiative began with four health camps and awareness sessions conducted at Pratima, Kisna, Banani, and Prativa brickfields.
The response from the community was both encouraging and overwhelming. A total of 210 patients received medical check-ups and treatment, while 127 individuals actively participated in health awareness sessions. The programme addressed common health concerns, promoted preventive care, and created awareness on hygiene, nutrition, and well-being – critical areas for communities with limited access to healthcare facilities.
These camps are designed not only to provide immediate medical support but also to build long-term awareness and health-seeking behaviour among migrant families who often remain excluded from mainstream services due to mobility, economic constraints, and lack of access.
Encouraged by the positive response, KMWSC plans to expand this initiative across 35 brickfields in the districts of Nadia, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas in the coming weeks. The programme aims to ensure that healthcare reaches those who need it the most – right at their doorstep.
This initiative reaffirms the belief that access to healthcare is a fundamental right, and every effort must be made to bridge the gap for vulnerable communities.
“Taking healthcare closer – because every life deserves care, dignity, and well-being.”
