The Barefoot Teachers’ Training, aimed at strengthening grassroots education, was conducted on 16th and 17th March 2026 at the premises of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre. The two-day programme brought together 20 aspiring educated youths, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge to enhance their teaching practices within community learning spaces.
The training began with an engaging ice-breaking session, allowing participants to introduce themselves and build a sense of comfort and connection. This was followed by an overview of the training’s objectives, setting the tone for a participatory and reflective learning experience.
Key sessions focused on classroom management and child-centred approaches, covering topics such as joyful learning, characteristics of children, and the qualities of an effective teacher. Discussions on equity vs. equality, as well as empathy and sympathy, encouraged participants to think critically about their role in creating inclusive and supportive learning environments. The interactive nature of the sessions enabled participants to share experiences and learn from one another.
A highlight of the training was the storytelling session, where participants worked in groups to create and present their own stories. This activity demonstrated how storytelling can be a powerful tool to engage children, enhance concentration, and make learning enjoyable.
The training also introduced participants to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the four pillars of education, reinforcing the importance of rights-based and holistic education. The programme concluded with a reflective feedback session, capturing participants’ learning and insights.
The training served as a meaningful step towards building a cadre of committed community educators dedicated to nurturing young minds with care, creativity, and responsibility.
“Empowering young educators to create joyful, inclusive, and meaningful learning spaces.”
