Members of the Brickfield School Project team facilitated an exposure visit for Kim and her visiting team from St. Ignatius’ College, Riverview, Australia, offering them a first-hand understanding of the Brickfield School Project and its integrated community initiatives.
The visit began at the Brickfield School Project Resource Centre in Basirhat, where the team was accorded a warm traditional welcome by the adolescent group and teachers. The visitors were introduced to the centre’s key interventions, including the Sanitary Pad ATM, tailoring classes, and special learning sessions for adolescents. The adolescent group also presented a cultural performance, reflecting their confidence and creativity. Handmade sling bags prepared by tailoring students were gifted to the visiting teachers, symbolising skill development and self-reliance nurtured through the project.
The team then visited three Brickfield Schools – Banarsi, Agragami, and Pratimaa – along with the Adult Education Centre at Banani. Prior to the field visits, a brief orientation on the project objectives and visit guidelines was shared. At each location, the visitors observed classroom teaching, reviewed curriculum materials, lesson plans, and registers, and interacted closely with children during learning activities, games, rhymes, and drawing sessions. These interactions offered valuable insight into the child-friendly and participatory teaching methodologies adopted by the project.
In addition, the visiting team engaged with parents and labourers to understand the socio-economic background of beneficiary families. They were taken around the brick kilns to observe brick-making processes, different types of work involved, and the living conditions of migrant workers. The visit also included interaction with the Mothers’ Group engaged in Organic Sack Farming, where the team appreciated the vegetables grown through this sustainable livelihood initiative.
The delegation expressed deep satisfaction with KMWSC’s holistic approach to education, child protection, skill development, and community empowerment within migrant brickfield communities. They appreciated the commitment and impact of the Brickfield School Project in creating meaningful change in the lives of children and families.
KMWSC extends its sincere gratitude to St. Ignatius’ College, Riverview, Australia, for their continued support and solidarity in advancing education and opportunities for children from migrant brickfield communities.
