In a significant achievement under the Brickfield School Project, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) successfully facilitated the mainstreaming of Karishma Kumari, a bright young student from MSW Brickfield School in Kalyani, into the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) residential school in Rajauli Block, Nawada District, Bihar.

Karishma’s story reflects the lived reality of countless children from seasonal migrant families who are forced to interrupt their education each year. Her parents, like many others, migrate to brick kilns in West Bengal for livelihood, leaving behind a fragile link between their children and consistent schooling. Karishma was first identified and enrolled in MSW BFS, where her dedication and enthusiasm for learning were quickly noticed by her teachers. Despite challenging circumstances, she remained focused, attended classes at the brickfield school, and demonstrated leadership among her peers.

Following persistent communication between the KGBV in-charge at Rajauli block and KMWSC’s field team in Nawada, the breakthrough came when Karishma was granted admission into the residential KGBV home. Now, she is assured of uninterrupted education in a safe and nurturing environment until Class XII — a transition that brings long-term stability and hope for her future.

This accomplishment reflects KMWSC’s growing Source Area Intervention in Bihar and Jharkhand, aimed at creating a sustainable education bridge for children of migrant labourers. Karishma’s successful mainstreaming is not just one child’s progress; it is a symbol of what dedicated outreach, community engagement, and institutional cooperation can achieve together.
