Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre observed World Environment Day on 5th June 2025 with an engaging and impactful awareness programme under the IDENTITY Project, focusing on the theme of environmental conservation and community responsibility.
The session aimed at sensitising children and community members on the urgent need to protect Mother Earth by adopting simple, actionable steps in daily life. Emphasis was placed on the importance of keeping surroundings clean, watering plants regularly, reducing the use of plastic, and internalising the "3Rs" — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — as guiding principles for sustainable living.
The highlight of the day was a series of live demonstrations and hands-on activities. Children enthusiastically participated by reusing waste materials to craft creative props. These imaginative creations, made from discarded plastic bottles, paper scraps, old cartons, and fabric, carried powerful messages about protecting the environment — not only displaying their artistic talents but also reinforcing the concept that waste can be transformed into something useful and inspiring.
The awareness session was not only informative but also deeply reflective, as the children discussed how individual choices affect the planet. Their voices echoed the belief that real change begins at home and within communities.
Parents and local community members who witnessed the event appreciated the initiative and praised the children for their awareness and creativity. It was a vibrant and meaningful celebration that underscored the power of collective action and environmental education at the grassroots level.
Together, we pledged to nurture nature and be mindful stewards of the planet we call home.
“Let us not just celebrate Environment Day — let us live it every day.”
