On 8th April 2025, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) took another powerful step in weaving education and healthcare together for the benefit of migrant families under the Brickfield School Project. The initiative was carried out across multiple brickfields in Kalyani, Nadia district, ensuring children and their families were cared for not only academically but also physically and emotionally.
The day began with the Annual Examination for Group B and C children from Jaiswal-A, SBF, and TONY brickfields, hosted at the TONY centre. A total of 60 children appeared for the examination, showcasing their learning and progress after months of classroom engagement in challenging environments. The event stood as a testament to their resilience and the committed efforts of teachers nurturing education amidst the dusty fields of brick kilns.
Following the examination, Phase 2 of the Health Programme was rolled out with health check-up camps at ABG, MSW, and Shanti brickfields. These camps provided free medical consultations and medicines to 120 patients, including infants, children, women, and men from migrant labour families.
Simultaneously, Health Awareness Sessions were conducted, drawing in 150 parents. These sessions focused on preventive healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, and the interlink between health and education. Parents were sensitised on how a child's well-being — physical, emotional, and mental — plays a crucial role in their ability to learn and grow.
This dual approach reflects KMWSC’s firm belief: a healthy child is a learning child. By integrating education with healthcare, we strive to create holistic support systems for migrant children, ensuring that no child's potential is lost to poverty, illness, or neglect.
