Healthcare is a basic human right, yet for thousands of migrant labourers working in the brickfields, access to medical services remains a distant dream. With strenuous working conditions, poor sanitation, and a lack of healthcare facilities, these workers and their families are highly vulnerable to illness and disease. Recognising this pressing need, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) has integrated a Health Programme into the Brickfield School Project, ensuring essential healthcare reaches these underserved communities.

Between 20^th January 2025 and 31^st March 2025, KMWSC conducted 37 health check-up camps across 39 brickfields of Kalyani in Nadia, Basirhat and Haroa in North 24 Parganas, Akra and Pujali (Budge Budge) in South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. These camps provided medical support to 2021 individuals, including men, women, children and infants from migrant families. Patients were screened for common illnesses, malnutrition, respiratory problems, and other health concerns. Free medicines were distributed as per the prescriptions given by the attending medical professionals.

Alongside the check-up camps, Health Awareness Meetings were also conducted to educate the community on the critical topic of “Health & Hygiene”. These sessions focused on the importance of clean drinking water, proper sanitation, and preventive healthcare practices to reduce the spread of infections and improve overall well-being. 1429 members of the brickfield community participated in these awareness meetings.

For these migrant families, who have long been deprived of healthcare access, these initiatives are more than just medical interventions—they represent dignity, care, and a step towards a healthier future. KMWSC remains committed to addressing the healthcare needs of marginalised communities, ensuring that no one is left behind.
