From Brickfields to Board Exams: A Tale of Hope and Determination

In the heart of the brickfields of West Bengal, amidst the harsh realities of migrant labour, a small group of children dared to dream. Five girls and a boy, hailing from the Mushahar community of Eknar Village in Nawada District of Bihar, stood against the tide of adversity and emerged victorious in their Class X board examinations. This remarkable achievement not only marks a personal milestone for these children but also a beacon of hope for their entire community.

Their journey began three years ago when the Brickfield School project team of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre spotted them amidst the toil of their parents in the brickfields of West Bengal. These children, destined for a life of migrant labour in the brickfields, were given a chance at education. Identified and enrolled in the Brickfield School, they were later mainstreamed into the local high school upon returning to their native village in Nawada, thanks to the relentless efforts of the project team.

It was not an easy task to convince their parents, who relied on their children’s labour for survival, to prioritise education over immediate financial gain. Yet, with patience and perseverance, the project team succeeded in persuading them. The decision to keep their children out of the brickfields and in school was a pivotal moment, setting the stage for a brighter future.

Supported by KMWSC, these six children embarked on a journey filled with challenges and obstacles. But armed with determination and resilience, they navigated through it all, overcoming every hurdle that came their way. With access to textbooks, educational materials, and remedial coaching, all provided by KMWSC, they honed their skills and prepared for the ultimate test.

And when the results were announced, their hard work bore fruit. They not only passed but excelled, proving that with opportunity, support and strong determination, anything is possible. Their success is not just their own; it is a triumph for their village, their community, and for every child who dares to dream beyond the confines of their circumstances.

As they stand on the threshold of a new chapter in their lives, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre extends its heartfelt congratulations to these remarkable young individuals. May their journey inspire others to believe in the power of education and may they continue to shine bright as beacons of hope in their community. With relentless support and dedication, their educational journey is just beginning, and KMWSC pledges to stand by them every step of the way.
