The Brickfield School Project not only provides education to children of migrant families in the brickfields, but also provides basic health care services to the migrant community. As part of the basic healthcare service, a medical practitioner, assisted by paramedic staff examine patients at medical camps and prescribe medicines as required. Cases which require institutional medical care are referred to Government Health Centres and Hospitals. Medicines prescribed at the health checkup camps are provided to the patients – needless to say – at free of cost.
The medical check-up camps are held in three phases at an interval of 45 days. Alongside health checkup camps, health awareness camps are also organised to create awareness among the brickfield community on various issues related to good health and hygiene. From December 2022 till 16th May 2023, more than 4300 patients from the brickfield community have been screened in the three phases of the health checkup camps held at the brickfields in Kalyani of Nadia District, Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district and Akra & Budge Budge in South 24 Parganas. A little over 1800 individuals participated in the health awareness camps organised alongside the health checkup camps.
Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre conveys its sincere thanks to the funding agencies for their support which made it possible to undertake this programme. The Organisation also thanks the brickfield managers, owners, doctors, paramedic staff and the teachers for their cooperation in holding the health checkup and awareness camps.
